  1. their not illegal there illegal to breed

  2. It makes me mad that they are illegal, knowing that not only are they not wild animals, but other states can have them, and we can't?

I would like to know the same. Thans for posting. *Star for you*!

  3. because some people do not take care of their pets and let them into the wild where they kill native species.. so to prevent this.. the law makers just decided to ban the ownership of ferrets!

  4. They are illegal in California because they disrupt the natural environment by eating snakes. !i I don't see how a ferret hurts the environment, when in California they are building tons of houses and destroying nature for profit !i

  5. Stupid people make Stupid Laws.

  6. usually it's out of misguided and antiquated beliefs about ferrets:

    • myth - they'll from feral colonies in the wild and disrupt the natural environment...yet this hasn't happened in any of the other 48 states where ferrets are legal.

    • myth - they pose dangerous health risks to the human population...yet, there have been no cases of a ferret giving rabies to a human, and there are far far more injuries from dogs & cats each year than ferrets.

    • myth - they'll do too much damage to the poultry industry since they can kill a large number of birds in a short time...so can cats, dogs, and a number of other animals.

for the most part, it's all a bunch of hooey. the rest of the continental US has had no issues like california, wash dc or nyc worry about.

however, some places like hawaii have strict import regulations when it comes to animals. this is a rabies-free state and they do what they can to limit the chances it will be brought in by animals. since ferrets can feasibly carry rabies, they are excluded from being allowed in.

  7. Ferrets are often misunderstood and thus outlawed out of ignorance of the truth. Ferrets don't kill snakes - you are thinking of a mongoose. They don't form feral colonies - most are fixed and ferret in the wild will usually die within 7 - 10 days from starvation or dehydration - or be killed by another animal as ferrets have almost completely lost their sense of fear. (I've seen them walk up to a stray pit bull as bold as can be and want to play.) California has made them illegal out of ignorance, and despite having been proven wrong, won;t remove them from the list of banned species partly because the Fish & Game department and the Legislature can't decide just who has the authority to remove them from it. Hawaii and Puerto Rico are small islands and have a very real concern about rabies, and the loss of endangered, native species. Ferrets, while potentially carries of rabies, will usually die of the disease long before they are able to pass the disease on to others.
