  1. cause of tradition

  2. For adequate protection against hazards while fighting fires.

  3. I would say mostly because of tradition. But that shape may be more sturdy if say something fell on their heads. The all around bill keeps off water.

  4. Keeping water from entering your jacket is correct, but more important is live embers and debris roll off your back.

  5. To keep water dripping down their necks. In very old pictures of firefighters -- from the 1840's -- they are wearing the same kind of helmets used today! If you ever find a book called "As You Pass By," the history of every piece of fire-fire equipment is explained.

  6. They are shaped to deflect and/or protect against objects hitting their heads from above or any lateral direction. The crest gives extra protection from falling objects while the tailpiece would deflect a falling object away from the upper spine.  The fact that helmets were similar in ages past is not surprising considering that they had the armourer's art to draw on.

  7. to keep the aliens out of our brains. Those d**n robot aliens they take my thoughts thay take too much i not me anymore.  MY brains my brains my brains
