  1. It seems to me that Canberra legislation (unlike that of other jurisdictions) recognises individual rights and responsibilities. They seem to be prepared to take some flack and criticism in order to allow a degree of freedom for people to make their own choices. hence the availability of fireworks, pornography and other things.

As a kid, I and my friends could buy fireworks in a virtually unrestricted manner. Everyone understood the dangers of careless and/or intentional misuse. We took chances; scared the h**l out of ourselves from time to time; and were better from the experience. Few people were injured, and those who were, knew it was their own fault and knew what to avoid next time. We are seriously weakening our society by this constant insistence on removing all risk from every endeavour. We learn from risk taking and danger and are diminished by their removal.

  2. Their logic does sound a bit crackers doesn't it

  3. Some of the problem is fire danger as well.  Maybe Canberra has a higher rate of rainfall, cooler summers which lowers there fire danger.

Oh wait, there are a lot of politicians in Canberra, maybe that could be the reason.   :)
