The first poster was right; because they're open Friday, Saturday and Sunday to take advantage of weekend business, they close Monday to rest, restock and get ready for the upcoming week.

I think it is because many get fresh fish and the fishermen don't go outon Sundays.

I canremember that year ago, but few here do not open now.

It's always when I feel like fish and chips too!

But I suppose that the people working in the fish and chip shops have worked extra hard on Friday nights and Saturday's and Sunday's too.

They deserve a break. Work on their cooking skills. : )

i think its in jewish religion not to sell fish on mondays, or something like this.

Because the British are very lazy*, and people who work on Saturdays think they should get a day off to make up for that; so instead of hiring enough people to fully staff a shop all week, businesses close on Mondays.  And sometimes on Wednesday afternoons, too!

*Before anyone gets all mad at my (obviously rather sweeping) stereotyping of Britain, how else does one explain the higher standard of living in the US and Australia?
