I once read in a work by the animal behaviorist Richard Dawkins that flies (or, rather, moths in this case) may be attracted to lights such as candles and bulbs because they instinctively use light sources such as the moon to navigate and decide which direction is up or down. It is because of this instinctive quality, that a larger, brighter light source would seem to confuse moths or other flying insects.
