I think that there so big because in america there are alot of overweight people. Overweight people usually like bigger portions so they give you that. And also because they probably want to charge you more money instead of paying cheap and having small food. and also because they probably want you to get fuller early so you can get up get out and leave.

Because the restaurants learned that they could charge a little extra for the larger portions and consumers were stupid enough to buy it (thinking that they were getting a better deal).

I think that, as a country, Americans think bigger is better. Bigger cars, bigger houses, bigger portions. No one needs a quadruple burger or a quart of soda, but we think we do - especially when we think we're getting a good deal. "A 32oz coke and ginormous fries for only 30 cents more? Gimme that!" How many times have you heard someone complain about tiny nouveau food for $$$$ and then say they could get more at Red Robin. Honestly, that nouveau food is much tastier and will satisfy you with less food consumed.

Advertisers also play on the "Men need big food because they're men!", hence the hungry man dinners and enormous omelet/sausage breakfasts. Women get guilted into Vitamin Waters and Healthy snacks, but often those fat free cookies have just as many calories as the full fat ones - and you'll eat more because you think they're healthier!
