This is a random question, but why do forks cave in a little on the fourth point?

  1. Forks are a evolution of the spoon in large part -- so often the earliest forks were created with curved tines.  The website I listed said forks were sometimes called "split spoons".  Also - number of tines and the placement of the fork in the place setting determines the fork's use -- such as the dessert fork, which is smaller than the standard dinner fork and usually has only three tines. Other types of forks include carving forks, fish forks, pickle forks and fondue forks.
