why are fossils found near bodies of water such as lakes , oceans, and rivers that exist today or that once existed?

  1. dead animals or organisms that die in lakes and oceans sink to the bottom  and the waters  allow the body to decompose in one piece without being eaten by scavengers alos the waters are calm enough to keep the body from being moved around the bottom of the ocean floor.Not to mention that many animals prefer to be around water instead of the desert so it is more likely that they die near water sources.
