Why are free-to-air TV networks important businesses?

What aspects of them are necessary, beneficial and important?

They are important because they provide jobs.More importantly people wouldn't go and pay for pay TV if all they watch is the news.People need to know whats going on around them and some people even get a benefit out of the advertisements on them(it is surprising how many people go and buy something after seeing it on TV)People can even get a good work experience out of TV network because some aspects of a TV network are complicated like the behind the scenes work.If you want to be part of a camera crew in a movie and you can say that you worked on a TV station as a camera man for 3 years you have one up on the guy that's only experience is taking photos of plants in the park.
