this was in the past but My band director has been very protective over me. He’s not protective over the other students. he says im a mentor to the freshmen. but I have a developmental delay and adhd so i am naturally behind. I have been denied so many opportunities from him. I wanted to do things like Audition for Drum major or section leader but he says that my social skills aren't mature enough yet and he’s worried that i won't be able to handle it. He also kept me out of the top band since my freshmen year. I just wish he would given me a chance to do things like the other kids. I am a very talented musician but he’s not giving me the chance to show it. are all general ed teachers like this?

  1. I actually try and give leadership opportunities to students that we wouldn't naturally consider for such opportunities.  Sometimes the students needs some extra support, but it almost always turns out positively, and the boost in the student's self-esteem makes it worth my extra effort.   I would talk to your teacher, and maybe the principal to see if there is something that can be done.

  2. No, not all general ed. teachers are like that. I think if you really feel like you are ready for more responsibility in band you should talk to your principal or counselor about your situation. What would be the harm in at least letting you try out? Don't give up!

  3. I wouldn't call it overprotective. I would call it discriminatory and condescending. No, not all general ed teachers are so prejudiced. Can you talk to the principal about it? This band director is holding you back, and it isn't fair.
