I mean, this is ridiculus! Why should we have to pay for it?

  1. You can get free frames on the NHS, but you have to pay part of the cost of the lenses. The frames they have today are really up to date. Ask an optician to show you the NHS range of frames. I just had NHS glasses which are Varifocals and I paid £40 which included stylish frames.

  2. I think if you're on certain benefits you can get help towards the cost of glasses.

  3. Tell me about it!  I'm as blind as a bat and need to have some form of lense in front of my eye (either glasses or contacts) to be able to so much as walk from one room to the next.  Despite this, the NHS still don't think that glasses are a necessity and therefore I have to pay a fortune for them.  It's just simple lack of common sense in the NHS.  They'll pay for a boob job for someone with low self esteem but won't pay a much smaller amount of money to provide people with the things they absolutely must have to function on a daily basis!

On a more practical note, I believe that some employers have to offer their staff free eye tests so you might want to look into that.  I know it's not going to get you free glasses, but at least it's one less expense to have to worry about.

  4. Some people are entitled to a reduction in the cost of glasses and some opticians do free glasses for NHS customers

  5. Although bucket loads of cash are thrown at the NHS, some things still have to be paid for.  It is possible to pick up cheap pairs of specs, you just have to shop around.
