  2. The word 'bird' had a similar meaning as the word 'cool' has now. The story goes that a golfer named Ab Smith made a great shot and said that it was "a bird of a shot", so that is how the score of one under par became known as birdies. An eagle and an albatross are better scores than a birdie and are named after being great birds.

    I got this explanation from a book describing the meaning of words called 'March Hares and Monkeys' Uncles' by Harry Oliver.
