  1. First of all, you need to brush up on your own English reading and writing skills before criticizing everyone else's.  Second of all, do you really want people driving who can't read the signs?  Do you really think that they will just stop driving if we make it harder to read the signs?

  2. they are supposed to be that way, if you had to read " please yield to oncoming traffic" it would take you eyes off the road for longer. and when driving you should always keep you eyes on the road, so easily recognized symbols are used instead

  3. no you don't need to know the local language to be an effective driver.

if you have ever travelled to a place where english is not the main language you would know that - you would be able to get along fine.

if nothing else, you would learn the really limited vocabulary on signs very fast, or you would memorize a map - or maybe even get a gps system in your language!

I learned to get along fine in Japan in days, and that includes driving on the left, where the characters in the language essentially are nothing more then really complex icons.

now move along, and follow the signs :)

  4. Why do Stop signs always say STOP?  I was taught in driver's ed that a red octagon meant STOP.

    But I digress....

Icons are quicker and simpler to recognize, by people in all countries.  You will see those symbols anywhere you in the world.  I know most Americans don't recognize that the rest of the world exists, but it does, and the use of highway symbols is just one attmept to make the whole world friendly to ALL people, including those that speak a different language.

  5. It's all part of the dumb down, liberal point of view, that everyone belongs, legal citizen or not, and everyone has the rights that a U S citizen has whether they are one or not.

  6. They are called INTERNATIONAL for a reason.
