Why are houses so small in England?

Why don't you have big houses like here in America? Your cars are pretty tiny too.

Since London is the most common destination for Americans making a trans-oceanic flight, the first thing we do is to comment on the little cars, the refrigerators, and the small hotel rooms and houses. I thought the same thing when I was 18.

  Now that I'm older I realize that the city of Tokyo with almost 30 million people probably uses less energy than the city of Houston with 2 million. So many Americans have never been on a train in their lives. Since the late 1970's as Europe began building their network of intercity high speed rail, we deregulated our airlines to the point that we have no other options now. I know the distances are greater, but we frequently get on a plane to go 300 miles. We are faced with an increasing problem of paying for our daily lives.

   Spain came into the EU in 1986 and they were selling tickets on their first high speed rail in 1992. California formed the committee to design a high speed rail from Los Angeles to San Francisco 12 years ago, and they have never put the bill on the ballot? Yet the airports are completely overloaded largely because of so many people flying the short haul inter-california distances.

because the houses and the cars we have here are big enough for us. a family of 4 easily and comfortably live ina 3 bed here in england whereas in america EVERYONE needs massive houses... massive food.... massive everything

plus if each one of us had to have bigger cars and bigger houses we would be using much more fuel / gast to heat the houses and run the cars and pollute the world, and i think america is already doing a pretty good job of it so no need for england to join too yeah !

Following on from the previous answer, if your population density was the same as ours, your population would be 2.5 billion - does that answer your question?

i do find however that when i go to really old houses such as in York, the ceiling heights are low and the doorways are too,

i guess way back then people were shorter. but then i'm only 5'1" !!!

Maybe it's the weather.  Smaller houses are much easier to keep warmer during the long, cold winters.

I feel like being a bit snarky tonight - it's because unlike here in the States people don't have rear ends more than two ax-handles wide and therefore don't require the massive cargo size accomadations we do. At least one certainly never hears of people being cut out of their tiny houses when they've become too fat to, and yet, oddly we hear of people being cut out of their big houses here. Hmmm ...
