  1. these hydrothermal vent communties are found on a portion of the ocean floor that is called the abyssal plane. The abyssal plane, outside of these vents, is devoid of life. Therefore, the presence of these communities in an area that is totally surrounded by nothing (like a dessert oasis) is very remarkable.

    The energy for these is the geothermal vents (heat, gas, and sometimes, lava).
