Australia was once part of a land mass called Gondwana.It was made up of Africa,South America ,Antarctica ,Australia,New Zealand,Tasmania,New Guinea.

This land mass started to drift apart about 180 million years ago.

If you believe in Darwins Theory of Evolution(Which I Do)the species then change through evolution,to become the species that are found in different places around the world.

The Kangaroo is a marsupial,which is a very old species and I may be wrong but I think placental mammals would of evolved from this.As the conditions in Australia suited the Marsupials,there was no need for evolution to change them that much.

As someone already said there were land bridges between Australia and New Guinea and Tasmania which allowed movement of animals and humans.

In Australia we have a tree called the White Cedar ,that is also found in South America,which they say is proof of Gondwana.Also the rock types they say are  also used as proof.

Well actually there are some tree kangaroos found in Papua New Guinea.  It is connected to the Australian segment by a shallow continental shelf across the Torres Strait, which in former ages had lain exposed as a land bridge — particularly during ice ages when sea levels were lower than at present.

Consequently, many species of birds and mammals found on New Guinea have close genetic links with corresponding species found in Australia.  But they are not on Australia.
