what is up with these 8,9,&10 year old kids, esp. boys, ive noticed, who dont want to go outside and enjoy life. Why are they always sitting inside playing video games or watching t.v. when there are tons of things to do outside. no wonder there is an obesity problem in the U.S. Let me know your opinion and if you have an active kid, please share because, it would make me feel a little better

  1. Kids are lazy because their parents don't make them go play.

When I was little, my mom practically locked us out of the house and said don't come home until you're filthy and exhausted. (Ok , so I am exaggerating but you get the point).

Sometimes, especially in hotter months like Summer months, kids don't WANT to go outside. I think a lot of parents don't feel like arguing and just let them stay and in and watch TV and play on the computer.

I make my kid go play. Sometimes she grumbles at first but she always comes inside sweaty and exhausted and ready to take a bath and relax.

  2. im 12 and i just play basketball from noon tell 12 at night and dont like video games

  3. First of all, that is an unfair generalization of boys. There are lots of active boys, the problem is that many parents let the video games and TV's babysit their boys. Having a son in the age range you mentioned, I know that video games are so much more easy and exciting to them than going outside and finding their own entertainment. Parents have to be examples and have rules, limits and boundaries. Seriously limit the video games and TV, the more active and encouraging the parents are the more active the kid will be.

So don't accuse these boys of being lazy, look to their lazy parents.

  4. I have an extremely active child.

One way we have encouraged her to be active is to keep video games out of the house, and to limit TV.  The TV is off all day and we only watch the occasional educational video.

Video games and television are extremely addictive.  It is the adults who are responsible for making sure this addiction does not happen - and if it does, to do something about it.

Take away the games.  Turn off the TV.

  5. I limit the amount of time my kids can play on video games and watch t.v.

I also watch how they eat by offering healthy choices.

So far none of my kids are over weight. They are really not lazy either.

But I agree that many parents don't do these things. I also have noticed that the places I don't see kids out playing... seems to be big citys and poor places that they don't have a space to play in.

As well as schools offering less time to exert themselves. Where they spend an average of 6-7 hours a day.

  6. I have an infant daughter, an 8 year old son, and a 10 year old daughter.

My son is VERY active.  We live in the country.  He enjoys swimming, fishing, riding his bicycle or dirtbike, jumping on the trampoline, playing with the dogs, climbing trees.  Since he was born, he has had a fascination with wheels and he enjoys pushing around his Tonka trucks in the dirt, moving things in the wheelbarrow, pushing around a dolly (the kind used to move heavy objects, not a doll baby), etc.

Right now, we live in the south and it is extremely hot outside so he has been spending more time indoors.  He watches our hermit crab colony, plays with his toy cars, plays board games with his sister, and yes-he watches television and/or plays video games on occasion.

I limit the television, both in time and content (no SpongeBob here).  I also limit the video games, but when they are spending less time outdoors because of the weather (rain, heat, cold-which is rare here) I let them have more time on the Nintendo Wii.  Several of those games are VERY physical, and that is part of the reason we got that system-the Wii Sports pack offers a workout, especially the boxing.

My daughter is less physically active than her brother, but not lazy-she enjoys riding her bike, swimming, etc. When she is inside, she is usually reading or drawing or watching Animal Planet (she aspires to be a veterinarian).

The children can only watch the television or be on the game systems if the parent allows it.  I have taken the access card out of our satellite box before, and hid the remote controls to the games when I felt it was necessary (usually when we had company over that are used to vegging out).
