  1. Hybrids are typically gasoline.  They use standard techniques for cleaning up the exhaust.

The little Citroens you refer to have small diesel engines which are very efficient.  Thus, lower CO2/mile.  Also Citroen has put on the latest and greatest emission control devices.

End result is a very clean vehicle with good fuel consumption.  Hence awards.

  2. Hybrids still use gasoline.  Bio diesel is made from organic materials and doesn't emit the same chemicals that gasoline does.

  3. the key to your question is the word "little".

I don't know what a "so called" hybrid is; but real hybrids that use an ellectric motor to assist the performance of the infernal combustion tend to be mid-range size vehicles, even chealsea tractor types eg lexus R600.  Bigger cars need more energy to move them.

if the citreon also had an electric motor then that would be even better. eg the Berlingo Electrique http://www.berlingo-e.co.uk/

A small diesel will have lower Co2 emmissions, but can have higher emmissions of hydro-carbons etc.

when in queing traffic the "hybrid" infernal combustion engine stops altogether, hence the £0 congestion charge to reduce particulate pollution (a problem with diesels) on the main routes that cause hundreds of deaths a year.

  4. Remember : diesel engines were invented to run on peanut oil....a biodiesel fuel.

Its not just little cars...Peugeot and Citroen's have been using these fuel efficient engines for years. I had a Peugeot 405 Station wagon that regularly did 4.5 litres of diesel to 100km.....that is roughly the same as Toyota hybrid super efficient car today. The thing is ,the Peugeot was around 15 -20 years ago and they are even more efficient now. Here in Australia I have found unbelievable red tape and administration to stop importation of these types of cars....is it government policy to protect Australia produced gas guzzlers (Ford and GM)? The importation tax on these vehicles is legalised theft. I suppose the oil companies donate to government parties and governments make the laws.If you have a fuel efficient car you dont sell as much oil and government dont collect as much tax on fuel...right!!
