  1. Matter must cycle because there is only a fixed amount of matter.  For instance, if carbon did not cycle it would build up in plants, or other organisms, and eventually the carbon source (CO2) would become exhausted and no new life could exist.  With a cycle, the plants take in carbon, die, and decomposers release the carbon back into the environment so it can be used by other organisms.  This situation allow for the continuation of new life.
