Question:

Why are men more likely to be the victim of violent crime than women?

And before anyone says they aren't, I checked the stats. Males are indeed more likely to be the victim of violent crime than females are, you can check yourself though :)

Seriously though, why? On average, men are physically stronger than women, so wouldn't it be more logical to assume that women would be the victims more often, seeing as they'd be less likely/able to fight back and defend themselves?

Your thoughts?

  1. who says a violent crime has to be done physically? women are more adept at mental manipulation because they work harder at appealing to the opposite s*x, both overtly and covertly,so naturally they would be better at abusing men (for whatever reason). I feel that men who love deeply stand to suffer the most, and ultimately experience the most abuse.

  2. My theory is that it has something to do more with the way both think, when i compare and contrast i feel that woman are more based on impulse and thier feelings are always changing and with males they are more of a set mind.

  3. Mudkip has a good point.  All the free self-defense classes aimed at keeping people safe are for women only (yes, every single one I've ever seen).  Most of the awareness programs are only trying to stop violence against women.  Women have it drilled into their heads that they shouldn't be out by themselves at night and things like that.  Men aren't for the most part.  Some of my friends looked at me as if I was nuts for saying I don't go out by myself at night if I can help it, but just nodded along when my female friends said the same thing.  What's the difference?

Also, even some criminals have the notion they're not supposed to "hit girls."  So they'll attack men.  Men who've attacked women in prison-especially sexual assaults- are often victims of attacks themselves in prison.

  4. Because men have more violent natures...period.  Somehow...men have come to confuse violence with strength and bravado...and they're more territorial as well.

  5. Because it is considered to be cowardly and pathetic for men to hit woman Since men are the more likely demographic to be aggressive and fight, they fight with men more often and therefore more men are the victim of violence

  6. Feminism has sold the idea that men never victims, only perpetrators.  So, society in general and the government care so little about men's welfare and that nothing is done to help, compared to the attention women get.

Don't believe me?  Google "violence against men" and then "violence against women" and compare the number of hits.

  7. Women scheme, plan and there is no logic in a woman who is commiting a crime. Women commit more crimes of passion, crimes against loved ones, than men. These crimes are typicaly violent crimes against men.

  8. They go out more, are more likely to become dangerously aggressive when drunk and that aggressiveness is more likely to be perceived as a threat by other men. It's pretty obvious any Saturday night in any town. Also men are more likely to get into physical confrontations over women than vice versa.

Physical strength isn't going to matter much if the guy has a knife in his hand.

Do these stats include rape? Most of which is unreported.

  9. Bar fights? Chivalry? A combination of the two?

  10. My guess would be that women are trained from an early age to avoid dangerous situations for fear of rape. Many women avoid walking home alone at night and putting themselves in unsafe environments, whereas men might not think as much of walking through a city late at night or that sort of thing.

  11. I think men are more likely because they are less likely to report it. I mean, it must be pretty hard for a guy to swallow his pride, go to a poice department, and say "my wife beats me up" People don't seem to sympathize with men the way they would a woman and that's sad to me.

  12. my theory is that the men still have to take care of the entire dirty business that come as an integral part of all human societies.  No gender equality when it comes to the dirty jobs.  Hence men are prone to more violence than women.

Unfortunately crime is an integral part of human society and even in countries like Saudi Arabia where harsh punishments like cutting off limbs and arms still happen publically, crimes happen.  It is a dirty job and unfortunately there will be always somebody required to do it.

  13. Pass it on: How condescending...

I'm gonna tell ya one thing, women are just as territorial as men, just try and watch a woman move in on another womans man, or try and tell another woman that she's not doing something right, and you'll see.

You are right about the fact that we are generally more agressive, this is because we have more physical strength to fall back on.

The reason that men are more likely to be victims of violent crime is because we are more likely to not back down from confrontations.

There are loads of other factors too numerous to mention. Its not really a black and white issue.
