Why are metals more readily oxidized than nonmetals?

For example, zinc is more readily oxidized than something like chlorine. Why is this?

  1. metal are those substance which can release electron easily

    also oxidation means loss of electron

    chlorine which is one short of electron to occupy stable configuration

    so it will gain a electron and gaining of electron is reduction
