Why are mixtures called impure substances?

  1. They are a mix of two pure substances which make it impossible for them to be one pure substance. Therefore; you have to concede that they are impure.


  2. With a pure substance we know exactly what is in it.

    If it is an element, then all the atoms are the same.

    If it is a compound, then it has a formula and we know exactly which atoms are present and what ratio they are in and they are chemically combined so that they do not change.

    In a mixture we do not know exactly what is in it nor in what ratio

    Mixtures can be homogeneous- the same all the way through and heterogeneous- different throughout. Even in a homogeneous mixture which can be a solution we do not know the amounts present of the parts the solute and solvent
