Thorstein Veblen in his seminal work "The Theory of the Leisure Class" speculated that our modern civilization worked on two basic principles: conspicuous display and conspicuous leisure.

A model, as a prototypical "leisure class member" exhibits things that are symptomatic of having free time to waste on oneself and living a life of unproductive self-obsessed 'work'. A model can preen themselves, work out hours a day, eat expensive and particular things (or nothing at all), and become fairly useless for anything but looking at.

People who are not models must live their lives to be useful to themselves and their families. They don't have hours on end to life weights, do situps, or diet themselves into wafer thinness.

But who knows? Maybe Thorstein is wrong.

Noodles are thin because if they were thick they would take too long too cook.  Oh, models?  Well most male dress designers are homosexual and are uninterested in women in any sexual sense.  Most heterosexual males, who generally are not dress designers, prefer women with a more more "natural" figure. That I believe is the unacknowledged truth.
