Why are monopolists seen as reducing social welfare?

  1. As there is no substitute for the good they can raise prices and restrict quantity, so the consumers has to pay high prices or go without the good they consumer also has less choice.


  2. With no competition they can raise the price of a neccessity through the roof and collapse the currency
