Why are most Republicans white?

I am a black conservative, Republican. But, I think most minorities are Democrat, because the liberals give the ILLUSION of wanting to help them out of the 'situation' they are in--life of disadvantage by creating a bunch of government sponsored programs instead of putting people in temporary programs where they learn work ethic and how to care for themselves AND NOT just throwing money at them.

The weird thing is that the predominant party of the slave holders in the South during antebellum times (1850-1860)  was Democrats! Lincoln's party was Republican...  However, the ideas changed of course and the party of Kennedy (Democrat) became a beacon during the Civil Rights Era.

And yes... Cassidy is totally wrong! Republicans during the Civil War era did NOT enforce, care for, or go for slavery. It was a blight on the economy and outdated. They mostly hoped it would go away... Republicans during that time were all about industry and slavery was about agrarianism... farming... it was outmoded to Republicans. Not to say they were for civil rights, but they weren't for having slavery last ...

The 1964 civil rights act and subsequent 1965 voting rights act resulted in a change in the parties. From then onwards, the republican party was against measures to give voting rights to minorities, while the democratic party was in favor of granting minorities voting rights. Until then minorities in the South were prevented from voting via a number of discriminatory methods, some of the most common being literacy tests which were not scored impartially.

Minorities continue to favor the Democratic party because their right to vote is still under attack by the Republicans. Even in the 2000 election Florida selectively disenfranchised minority voters. They compiled a highly erroneous purge list of people they removed from the voting list without notification or due process. Thousands of them had never been convicted of a felony, many of those who had were supposed to have their voting rights restored already. Many of the disenfranchised merely had names that bore a slight resemblance to a convict.  This illegal purge of poor and minority voters decided the outcome of the 2000 presidential election. Blacks accounted for 88% of those removed from the rolls, they made up only about 11% of Florida's voters.

Because most blacks won't vote for them because of their   use of race to gain  support in southern states since 1964. Bush is making a real effort to over come this legacy and gain more Black votes for the Republicans,

Edit: In the 1950's Republicans got almost 40% of the Black vote in national elections and would have gotten even more had they been allowed to vote in southern states. Almost all Blacks in the south, including MLK.  supported the Republican party because the Southern Democrats  were White segragationist and the Republicans were still the Party of Linclon. The people here that are trying to explain Black party afiliation using economic self interest arguments are cluless about history.

i think it is because republicans are "conservative" and they often try to keep everything the same

things they value in general:

tradition

patriotism (sometimes blindly following people)

thinking they're better than others... it was the republicans who had a lot of the money and enforced slavery, so in general once again a lot of racists are white

Then you are living a sheltered life.  Black republicans are out there.  The fact that you admit you haven't met one says something about you.  There are several that have served in various capacities in the past, J C Watts, Michael Steele, Condoleezza Rice come to mind.

Go to Arizona, that place is chock full of minority Republicans. The black couple that lives next to me is Republican. I sit outside at night with him, drink beer and tell him exactly what is wrong with his political views. He drinks beer and points out why Democrats are constantly wrong.

Its funny because his wife and my wife sit over at my place and chat while the kids run around. Then about 10:00pm his wife comes back over with his kids and my wife yells at me to come home.

There are plenty of "colored" republicans, and they attend to the republican ideology (less government, good work ethics, conservative practices, and $$$ interest (j.k.)) I don't know why people tend to think that just because I'm black that I can only have a voice by being a Democrat. I think that's sort of racist. And to think that minorities are repressed and thus attend to the Democratic Party, as to "Thank Ya for helping us po' ol uneducated people have voice in OUR America." is silly. And may the facts be noted that the Republican Party has provided more opportunities for minorities and women in the Supreme Court and Executive administrations. (Please, look at Condoleezza Rice.)

Because in most cases White people have more to gain from a conservative government than do minorities because Whites have a lot of the available power in the system.

Most of America is white period....the Democratic party is mostly white.

It would stand to reason that a higher percentage of the minorities are in the lower class, therefore more vote for the party which is more socialist.

That's what democracy is.  Voting for whatever helps you personally.  Not necessarily what is based on principles.
