Not all are.  They are just used to being in charge of the house and family.  It's hard to break that habit.  You have to lay down the law.  Tell her she had her chance and now it's your turn.  You'll go to her if you have any problems.  She'll respect you for it in the long run.

I'm not married but I would think, it doesn't have to be.  Fear is not real except in the mind.  If you do not like it, dispose of it.  (Fear, not your in-laws.)

My Mother in Law is AWESOME! She treats me like one of her sons. No complaints here.

Its because the mother in laws expect that their son is  going to marry angel and that they will behave exactly as they imagined, they should do whatever they think without being having to tell them!  Of course a monster will be created  if they have this mentatlity

Lol and the daughter in law wishes that her husband could magically make his mum disappear and in this crazy drama it is the poor old guy who suffers in the middle. THE END

two reason.

1. the person whom she broguht up with her love,( mother's love is most pure farm of love) has become obedient(yes it happens) to another lady.

2. second she has the double standard, she wants that her son may inclined to her, and in the same time she wants that her son-in-law should be more obedient to her daughter than his mother.

The mother in law wishe the best for her own children, but their dream (of ideal life) will collaps if their daughter/son in law acts upon other beliefs and culture. (that's why so many mothers (and fathers) refuse marriage with a woman outside their country..) It is also the mother in law that would deny that some actions in their culture are good, but other actions are also good. Their way of life is the best, a way of ignorance... my mother in law fights with me over little things, like i don't stand up earlier to make breakfast for my husband and wake him up. Simply i know my husband hates it, he wants first RELAXED burshing his teeth and dress up make wudu and salaah and after that breakfast. Sometimes he makes for me breakfast, which is agianst the nature of the woman, it makes me lazy in her eyes... And when my husband speaks i want her to be in this way, she will shout that i brainwashed her little son... "Ow woman grow up, your son is an adult, not living in your house anymore... :@"

Cause they want the best for their kid. They wanna make sure that you're right for him/her. And they could also be possibly jealous that their baby is interested in someone else and is going away....

Alhamdulillah mine is not so 'scary' she is a gentle soul bless her. Maybe it would be a bit different if we all actually lived together, but she is in another country altogether.
