Question:

Why are my 2 kitten's no longer getting along?

I've had my 2 kittens for almost 5 months now, and they've always gotten along. They have not reached sexual maturity, but my vet told me to get them spayed/neutered, so they got spayed/neutered yesterday.

Anyways, after bringing them home, the male is now hissing at the female whenever he sees her (though they were best friends before the vet), and I thought maybe it was because she was still a little sedated and she was acting strange to him. But this morning, the female is acting normal again, and the male still hisses at her and even started attacking her head. Any ideas why he's acting this way?

  1. I think the male is become territorial because of what have you done... Maybe he doesn't want to have the female kitten around you...

It is just a while, maybe 5days. Anyway, what you did is good  for your pets, you reduced their risk of certain cancer.

  2. THEY HAVE DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES

  3. Ok well they just got spayed yesterday. The are probably still groggy from the meds and upset about having gone to the vet and had procedures. How happy do you think you'd be if you got stuff pulled out of you and then someone came along try to buddy up to you and play or something? It's probably just him still upset about everything. Both of my cats reacted different. My male was groggy and irritable but lazy and my female was fine just not hungry or wanting attention.

  4. He probably is just really moody, and sore from the surgery. Try not to worry too much, I'm sure your male cat will start acting normal within a couple days. You may want to try to keep him and her separate...if shes trying to play with him and hes sore, he's going to act out to try and tell her to back off.

He may also be trying to establish being the alpha.

  5. when  human is sedated for surgery, they are always asked to not sign any important papers for at least 24-48 hours after surgery because of the effects of the sedation.  animals could well be the same.  Maybe your male kitten is still messed up from the surgery.  I would scold gently when he does it and not worry so much about it.  animals feed off of their owners energy, good or bad.  Relax and expect him to behave.

  6. Hm, I would call the vet and make sure he's not experiencing any strange side effects from the surgery or medicine!

If the answer is no, I would just separate them (different rooms) and let them have some time apart, maybe even several days.  Maybe the kitty is even displacing some anger/aggression about having the surgery to the nearest thing...your other cat!

  7. He may be a little sore still and wants her to go away and not hurt him.

  8. When you fix your pets there are major hormone changes that take place.  In the long run your cats will be much calmer than they would have been if you hadn't done it.

  9. Geez, they just had surgery!  Give them time. . . after all, would YOU feel great after surgery?

It's not just that the male cat may not feel great. . .he's probably responding to the fact that his former female buddy -- as well as himself -- both smell a little strange (i.e. smell like the vet's office).

I agree that you may want to separate them for a couple of days.  Be sure to give them lots of extra (individual) attention in terms of kisses and cuddles, providing they like that sort of thing.
