Question:

Why are my dads grapes "going to seed?"?

My dad is a very successful gardener and has been growing trees, shrubs, fruit and veg in his south-facing garden for years. He planted a grape vine about 4 years ago now. For the first 2 years, it didn't bear fruit, which he expected. Last summer, and this year, he had some beautiful fruit...but then suddenly, a day or two after the fruit appeared, it disappeared, leaving behind what I can only describe as "spores" of seeds on the vine!

Does anyone know what this is, and how to prevent it?!

Any help would be appreciated!

  1. they take long as five yrs at four you will get a little but not much takes long time. dont pick the flower that turns into grapes silly goose now wonder your not getting grapes hahha

  2. The other answerer is right. What you thought were "grapes" were actually the buds. They can be green or purplish.

  3. They are just the blossom buds, just leave them, grape vines are hardy things.

  4. "after the fruit appeared " - that was not the 'fruit ' , as such .

What you initially saw was the flower buds , the bunches of which do look like tiny bunches of grapes.

In the photos i see that the flower buds have opened , and are flowering as per nature's intentions.

If left on the vine they will develop into grapes (good to keep the rain off during flowering if poss)

  5. Those are the grape vine's flowers.  If they are pollinated, you will get fruit.
