Question:

Why are my fire bellied toads hiding?

I have two fire bellied toads that I purchased in the early spring. At first they were very active, now that it is summer they move very little and hide almost all the time. They're not eating as much but seem healthy. Is this because of the rising temperature? I'm not sure if this is normal for toads since I haven't had them very long.

  1. i think it is just the heat. do you keep some little pond where they can swim in there? that should help too

  2. partial water changes every 2-4 days should be ok (complete water changes can harm your toads as the sudden change in water chemistry can be an issue).

fire bellies dont require uv light but it can be beneficial in small quantities but this is by no means a necessity

are they in direct sunlight they may just be trying to keep in the shade/ out of the heat they like it cool (under 21C preferably)

  3. First of all they need there area especially their water to be as close to 65 degrees as possible.  That is what they like and are use to.  Also it is important that fire-belly toads like a lot of water,  it is said that you should have 3-4 gallons of water per toad.  Or three toads per ten gallon tank. I would make the tank 90 % water, and ten percent land with a small place to hide.  The extra water helps keep it cooler as well. Remeber they are amphibians.   Also it is important to remember that these toads like most toads have poison glands on the back of their head.  their water needs to be changed completely every 2-3 days.  Or their toxins can build up in it.    In captivity these guys can live 12-20 years.  Sometimes longer.

  4. Hmmm.....of course i haven't seen your toads, but it seems to me like you describe them as lethargic? and lets see... you got them in spring and youre a beginner with fire bellies...lethargic...the lighting! sometimes all it is is the lighting. if you don't have a uvb lamp for them, you need to find out what kind of uvb lamp they need and get them one FAST! another possible cause is if you are not changing the water daily. yes they might not be out of water in one day, but you must change it. here's why: fire bellies secrete toxin from glands by their head. the toxin will build up in the water and can hurt them. hope it helps. Good Luck!!!
