Why are my frozen hamburger patties dark brown in the center?

I bought a box of hamburger patties and on the surface they are pink but when I separated the patties I noticed they are brown on the other side. Some are pink on both sides but with a huge brown center. What gives, are they bad???

chances are if they are brown they are old and well on there way to being freezer burned. they will have an off taste if you cook them and or attempt to eat them .  brown discoloration can also be from overexposure to light , meat turns brown in the light and with out a picture i cannot be sure of how much deterioration you have.

Could it be that they have been defrosted before? Go to the store and ask to exchange them just in case!
