Why are my hickory nuts dried up?

I have recently moved into a house that has a large older hickory tree. this year insdead of letting the nuts fall all over the ground, I thought I would collect them. So I have brought them in & put them to dry & decided to crack some today & all of the ones that have dried the nut is no good.

Does anyone know why? I live in Arkansas

Thanks

  1. There is an excellent chance thatyou picked them before they were truly mature.   The tree knows when to let them go.  It also could be a bad year.
