Question:

Why are my kitchen cabinets starting to warp and shrink?

Last year we had new cabinets put in that were supposed to be made of bamboo. We were told that bamboo holds up longer and is more duriable than most hardwoods. I had this type of wood put in because we use the kitchen a lot...for catering business...so the kitchen is always steamy and moist. Were we told wrong about the bamboo being the best wood?

  1. I don't have any experience with Bamboo, but like most natural materials, I imagine it is porous to some degree and may be warping due to the steam and moisture.

If it is not treated already, and if you do choose to coat it, it will be important to seal the wood. You can purchase clear varnish (water and oil based) at paint stores in various sheens. If you paint it, you must choose a primer that will effectively seal the wood, so moisture can no longer penetrate. Most latex products do "breath" a little, so do some asking before buying.

It is equally important to ensure that the wood is completely dry, outside AND inside, before you seal it. Otherwise, you will be locking the moisture in the wood. Make sure the kitchen is steam-free for many warm, dry days, before sealing.

    Good luck!
