I planted them earlier this summer as border to my tomatoes, the tomatoes are doing fantastic but the marigolds never did anything they get as much water and fertilizer as the tomatoes, but the just wilted. What should I do differently next year?

  1. I do the same thing with my tomatoes:  I plant marigolds around the border to keep pests away and they do well together.

However, marigolds do tolerate more shade than tomatoes.  Most of my marigolds have wilted, but the ones in the shade have grown tall...and their seeds later this fall will grow next year's plants.  I am assuming yours got too much harsh sun and wilted from the direct sunlight.

  2. Actually, it depends what zone You are in if the seeds will produce next years growth for marigolds.  Marigolds are subject to rust and black spot, so They need space to breathe.  They do require a lot of sun, but can grow in some shade.  Is there a lot of green growth? does the plant have brown spots on it?  If so, that is why it is not producing flowers.
