Question:

Why are my new Rats sneezing and scratching so much?

I just got 2 male rats yesterday and they are about 7 weeks old. Their breathing is normal because i don't hear any squeeky sounds. But they both sneeze A LOT. I've also noticed that they scatch quite a bit too.

Their coat is smooth and shiny, no discharge, clean a**s and eye and nose areas and ears. The only thing is that they sneeze and scratch a lot.

Does anyone know why? Are they sick?

Should I bring them back?

Thank you.

P.S. - I'm using carefresh, not wood shaving. They are in a big wired cage, not aquarium.

  2. i've heard that carefresh bedding can be dusty, which can irritate rats' respiratory systems.  you might try switching to something else and see if it gets better.  i use yesterday's news for litter and fleece for bedding.

  3. Rats are often a bit sneezy when first brought home to a new environment. If it persists past a week or you see signs like wheezing, lethargy, or red discharge from the eyes or nose, you need to see a small animal vet.

Are you sure they are scratching? Some grooming can look like scratching (l*****g the back feet and combing with the toenails). If you aren't seeing any scabs or any other signs of parasites I'd say they are fine.

Please don't bring them back, what good will that do? You'll need to provide them vet care at some point in their life or another, it's a responsibility you should have been ready to accept upon taking them home.

Find a good rat vet ahead of time:

  4. Sounds like allergies.  I would take them to the vet.
