Why are my roof asphalt shingles starting to curl? Cheap shingles?

They are 18 years old an some of them have cracked too! Roof was stripped at the time of reshingling. Are there shingles that last longer? What is the best quality of a roof shingle? Is there something that could be done with the roof to allow the shingles to last longer without curling. I was told that even though they are doing that in places, that they are still good. What is your take?

well hate to tell you but alot of shingles got a life of 20 years if there starting to curl looking like it soon well be time to get them changed if you wait to long your roof well get bad then theres big money , theres warenty on shings duno if you still have or not

i think everyone has a point, i think we can all agree that if the shingles are curling, the roof has reached its lifes potential.

it is simply time to strip the old shingles and install new, we now have many to choose from and be sure your roof in vented proper for your shingles.

Most manufacturers only give a 25 year life span, If the shingles are curling it's time to replace, I would call some roof contractors and get prices to Remove and Replace, you may have roof boards that could need to be replaced. as for cheap shingles, this would be asking for more problems, if price is your concern just have your roofer use 3 tab shingles cause when you get into dimensional shingles or architectural shingles will cost allot more. also don't let them talk you into just covering up your roof with more new shingles cause this will void the manufactures warranty. also when you get estimates do checks on the guys who give you estimates, go see their jobs and Please don't pay anyone intil the job is done, You can give a deposit to cover materials then you can pay the rest when they are done. garde of shingle ahs as much to do with longevity as proper instalation combined with ventilation and a well insulated attic.

Shingles can curl and you can get 5 to ten years out of your roof. Steeper the pitch of a roof the longer a shingle will last also. In construction the more you pay for a product the better the product is.

Shingle thickness and type of base material is what makes one shingle last longer than another. If you put a 25 year shingle next tyo 40 year shingle you can see and feel how much more durable the heavier shingle is. But with quality comes price

Our roof is about the same age yours but we do not have any curling.  There may be cracking but I can't see it from my yard.

As I recall there several differnt types of of shingles.  I think we picked the one below the best.  I think thebest were called architectural shingles and they cost a lot more.
