Question:

Why are my roses not looking too good?

First of all, it's my first year growing roses.

They were doing well until a few weeks ago. Now the leaves are turning yellow and I am not getting any more blooms.

I live in Michigan and it's been a hot, dry summer.

I water them every other day.

Are they just "done" for the year?

  1. Most varieties of roses are very temperamental and require lots of attention.  From past experience working with them in my landscape, it's crucial to use a good rose fertilize, keep the  soil moist by using mulch around them but don't over-water, and spraying them for insects "aphids" and diseases as directed.  Another trick I learned is to prune off the dead roses once they have turned brown and shriveled up.  Use a sharp pruning blade and cut them off at an angle.  Just think back to when they were doing well, and try to recall the conditions they were in at the time and do your best to recreate those conditions to make them happy.  One last thing, with it being later in the season, you may not see a 100% bounce back before fall, but come spring they should be fine again.  Good luck!

  2. you are probably watering them too much. I do the same thing, get the same result. Roses are like the easiest thing to grow, they love the sun, the heat and can handle the cold, its usually us that screws it up by watering too much. let them dry out for a day or two, see what happens. also, cut the yellow leaves off, or just pull them individually. when you trim roses back, be sure to cut the branch at an angle, they will grow back great. you will be fine, have fun with them!

  3. No they are not done for the year, I get some of the biggest and most colorful blooms closer to fall.

Are you giving them fertilizer?  It really sounds like they could use some.

Usually not a serious problem. Leaves turn yellow due to a lack of iron, nitrogen, manganese or magnesium, or a salt buildup. Add chelated iron to the soil, or in severe cases, spray iron sulfate on foliage. Apply a solution of Epsom salts and water to the soil during the season.

Here is a couple of links that I hope will help.

Another thing you can do is mix your coffee grounds in the soil, just scratch it in the soil or banana peels,

Don't over do any of these things.

    Good luck
