  1. test the soil see what the soil needs . also your cooperative extension will test the soil  for you . than you can find out if your maters need something or if they have too much of something, the cooperative extension is part of your state department of agriculture they can hel[p with all sorts of things you may need.

  2. Constant and even moisture for your tomato plants can be help a lot by mulching them with grass clippings. Then soak clippings and ground thoroughly. The ground will stay damp a long time under the clippings. If your fruit has black spots on the bottoms, (called Blossom End Rot) it is caused by uneven periods of moisture and a lack of calcium. There is a Blossom End Rot spray and it provides pretty quick results. Make sure there are no Colorado Potato Bugs on the plants. Look for little patches of orange colored eggs on the bottom side of the leaves. Use Seven to get rid of these pests if you have them. Tomatoes will do a lot better in cages or staked to keep the vines off the ground.  Good Luck

  3. wicket35 gave some good advice. You should also make sure that the soil does not totally dry out. Tomato's need constant moisture so the can grow and not crack or shrivel. Don't drown them. You can also check out Purdue and Cornell Universities web sites for more info and advice. Go to the Ag. Depts. Good Luck.
