Why are my tomatos not ripening this year?

It is odd I have lots of green tomatos, but they are just not turning red like they normally do. Have you ever heard of such a thing?

  1. It has probably been too cold and wet. They need lots of sun and heat.

  2. How about fertilizing them with a heavy phosphorus-laden compound?  Phosphorus helps promote bloom and fruit development.  Look for anything sold as a "bloom booster"

This is assuming all other requirements are met:  enough sun, enough moisture and no viral infections in the plant.

  3. Sounds like they are not getting enough sun. They need full sun. Maybe your weather has been too rainy or cloudy?

  4. Are you 100% sure that the tomato that you planted is a red variety?  I got some "beefsteak" tomato plants this year that actually turned out to be a green variety.  They stay green even when ripe.

As a side note, the green variety seems to be much sweeter and less acidic--just in case you decide that you want to try them next year.
