Why are my wm6 office mobile files not recognized by my laptop after sync all the sudden?

i have a palm treo 750 running wm6. i have created about a hundred mobile excel and word files on my treo and never had a problem editing them on my computer. now when i try to open or email a file i can't open them and it askes to search the web for a program to run the file. if i open the file with office it is a buch of symbols. i know the excel files end with .xlsx now and i'm not sure if it has always done this or not. any suggestions would help out alot, i'm a contractor and i write alot of bids in the field and email them to clients and it doesn't work now. thanks in advance!
