Why are oboe reeds different colors?

OK i just got a new oboe reed today and it was PINK and PURPLE! :D i was so happy and it was almost the best band day of my life. Anyway, it was pretty cool i guess, but my question is why are oboe reeds different colors? i have had all kinds of different colors and always needed to know.... why are the oboe reeds different colors?

  1. the person that makes them can use whatever color wrapping thread they feel like. some people may make them different colors to be able to tell them apart if they have a bunch since each may play differently.


  2. there is no set way to color reeds. it's mostly a personal thing to help you remember which reed is which. It makes more of a difference when you're making your own reeds so that you can visually tell which one is good for the high register, and which one is better for playing quiet or loud, or whatever you made that reed for.

  3. If you're buying hand made reeds from someone, they may use different colors to denote different specifications (shape, strength, tip, etc).  

    If you're buying commercial reeds, some companies use the neater colors to appeal to the young players (I'd've given my eyeteeth for reeds with school colors back then...)
