  1. The amount of muscles that each gender can put into it differs.

  2. Up until the Barcelona games, the format in archery is different for men and women.  The men distances are 90-70-50-30m and women shoots from 70-60-50-30m.  The new format has them shoot at the same distance.  This is mainly due to the fact that most women shoot lighter poundage bow than men.  So the segregation is a left over from those days.

Here in the US, most women shoots 36-44 pound bows, while men shoots 42-52 pound bows.

  3. well, men can probably pull a higher tension bow string allowing them more velocity and accuracy and stuff like that

  4. That's a very good question. I might understand archery still being segregated because the strength of using the bow, but shooting is just pulling a trigger.

I think they are trying to keep all of the Olympics "uniform."  All of the games (as far as I'm aware) are segregated, so they try to keep them apart.

If not, then I'm sure you'd see men and women's relay races, diving competitions, and others.
