I have been told that the English kept using the word when all others started to use other names, because there used to be (in English that is) Duchy of Holland.

The name 'Dutch' seemed to have stuck for those from the Duchy.

As no other language used the word Duchy for Holland in that time they all went with the Dutch themselves and called the people Hollander, and when the country came into existence, Nederlanders.

From Deutsch (german or actually the middle ages equivalent of this term, which is slightly different).  The lowlands area was settled by a germanic people (not german people, note), and do not make the mistake of calling a nederlander a german or his language deutsch, as I found out by accident once.  long story there.
