I think its because they been watching the little mermaid and the charmed episode where poebe turned into a mermaid a little to much and they've let it go to their head.  But personally it would be kewl to be able to explore the sea with out all the equipment but to become a full time mermaid would get really old.  Guess they dont realize there are no malls, or mexican returants underwater.  Its sea food for every meal.  I would miss all all the cool stuff that we have/take for granted on land!
