Why are people egoistic.?

This world would be such a nice place to live in, if no body demanded respect. If only every body would respect every body else not expecting any respect in reurn.

I do agree that people should not be egoistic.., but I feel demanding respect is something different from being egoistic, as we are all human being we need respect for ourself, Just imagine if people do not respect each other, and does not demand respect from anyone, how eratic the world would be ? Iam I not right ???
