Question:

Why are people incapable of seeing their own faults ?

The people I encounter always blame other people for their own failings and I am at a loss to figure out why.

I was driving down the slip road on to the motorway and moved from the left hand lane to the right hand lane behind the rest of the traffic. There were two other vehicles in front of me and the driver behind me decided he would try to undertake, but there was hardly enough space to undertake me and certainly not enough for the other two vehicles.

When I pulled on to the motorway the driver undertaking then decided that instead of just dropping back behind me he would push his way in front of me forcing me to break, drop back and rest my hand on my horn.

I then put my foot down a bit and, as he was in the slower vehicle, drew up along side him at which point he made it very clear that he thought the entire situation was my fault. I then left him behind as I sped up.

He was slower than me, dangerously failed at undertaking and blamed me for everything.

Any idea why..?

  1. wel I for one have no faults

  2. Nobody wants to take responsibility for their own actions.

For example, your driving a car and the guy in front of you slams on his break.

You think very quickly, oh what an idiot he is. However, from his perspective he slammed on his breaks because there was a nail on the road and he couldn't avoid it any other way.

Point being is people tend to take their accomplishments for themselves and when bad things happen blame gets pushed off to other people.

At the heat of the moment we become concerned about ourselves (defensive mechanism) it's not until later that we understand we are judging or hurting others unfairly.

  3. I encounter the same problem and dare I say it seems to be worse than ever. A schoolbus minivan tried to cut in front of me too short. There was plenty of room. Idiot. I guess anyone can be a schoolbus minivan driver. I laid on my horn too. Please don't take my bumper.

I live in the 4th worst driving state, Massachusetts. Nobody cares. It's all about them. We (most of the time) good drivers have to deal with them. You have to judge each situation and keep in mind your safety. Would your rather be right or alive?

Sometimes that is the choice. I fight when I feel it is safe or my only alternative. I had some jerk merge onto the highway. He didn't look. I couldn't move into the other lane because of another vehicle. I was ahead of the merger so it's not like I could have braked. I had to speed up but idiot merger did so also but was still behind me, more to the side still but still back a little bit. I just continued to speed ahead. It seemed the safest thing to do in that situation. He was punk kid that obviously got lucky on driver test day. It's not rocket science. The highway was busy but not that busy. There were spaces. He could have merged just behind me. He wanted to be a punk. I hate drivers like that. I wish they would lose their license. They don't deserve to have the privilege to drive.

    But what can you do.

Heck yesterday, I'm taking my dog for a walk and 2 neighbors came whipping around the corner and almost took us out. I kid you not. We were not walking in the middle of the road. One was an older lady and the other looked like typical punk kids (losers). Neither apologized and just barely slowed down. It's like we shouldn't have been there. Jerks.

I don't get what is wrong with people thesedays. But someone I worked with said to me, People suck. He is an upbeat, very intelligent, and great man. I miss working with him.

edit: I don't think I'm a perfect driver. I have no problem admitting fault or blame. Maybe it's because I'm willing to change any bad habits I have. It's part of growing and being human!!!!  I am a laid back driver, never in a hurry. If I'm late, I'm late. I tried. Usually I give myself plenty of time to get to work. It's just work. I'm not going to get their faster if I'm in an accident or dead!  Seriously, this is very simple. Very simple.

  4. Yes, he was an idiot. Unfortunatly over the last 20 years or so the UK's roads have got a lot busier, everybody works longer hours and is in more of a hurry to get to where they are going. I have driven for a living and there still is courtesy amongst profesional drivers. How ever the bloke in his repmobile is a total liability. On the M25 in an area of average speed cameras I had a car fly upbehind me and instantly start flashing his lights to try and intimidate me out of the way. When it was safe for me to pull in I did, he obviously was upset that I had not moved out of his way fast enough because he slowed down and swerved towards me a few times. I drive enough not to be scared by these tactics, with otheres this may have caused an accident. What we need are more police to see and stop bad behaviour, not cameras that only see speed.

  5. Drivers on today's roads are not particularly good at what they are doing, but even with being confronted by a proffessional will still not accept their faults.

  6. People can't see their faults because it has become easy to blame others for a situation.   People don't have to take on responsibility because they can blame an illness, a passing car, something that caught their eye, etc, etc, etc.  Once someone admits they are wrong they know there will be some kind of consequence.

    My personal oppinion

  7. We are all incapable of seeing our own faults because, if we recognized what we did as faults, we'd change.

  8. BECAUSE THERE IS IGNORANCE IN ALL OF US..  EVEN U

P.S I MEAN THAT IN A GOOD WAY!

    have a nice day :)

  9. Youve answered your own question.

there are many parts of your question which highlight your own failings and attitude twoards the other driver. (sorry)

Look at the book 'Driving The Essential Skills'.  Read all about defensive driving.

  10. Many people are selfish and Ignorant when it comes to driving. .everyone  thinks they are the best driver on the road and everyone else is an idiot.

It shouldn't be that way but it seems to be more like it every day.

Maybe its because cars are so comfortable & quiet these days and drivers don't realise they are travelling fast in a ton of lethal metal?

    -

The best place for people who drive like that is  a few miles down the road in front of you  . .  so just let them get on with it.

then keep your temper controlled and stay safe yourself.

Maybe you'll see them further down the road in the ditch - after an accident they have caused.

Nothing to be gained by upsetting yourself over it.
