Why are people online so mean??

Because they know they won't get caught for say something bad! They have anonymous names so their parent won't check them. They feel that nothing can be done being mean. So they would say, Why not!

they're probably unhappy people in real life or maybe they just had a bad day and are using this as an outlet ;)

Hmm....good question. Could it be perhaps that mother never gave them enough attention when they were young? Could it be some deeply rooted psyche problem stemming from the pace of life in general? Or could it be they`re just tw@ts?

Here is my theory:

Because the trend of this present generation is political-correctness, which means that in real life they are afraid to call a spade, a spade for fear of being labeled at hate-monger.  

There is so much fake niceness going on that when they get online and have a safe degree of anonymity, they retaliate with sarcasm and meaness to make up for their lack of guts in the real world.

Because they can be.  There are no real consequences online - no one knows who you are and you can't be socially ostracized for being a jerk.  The worst that happens is they get kicked out of the forum and have to create a new ID to get back in.

Don't worry, there are a lot more nice people than mean people in the world.

Half of the things people say online they would never say to someone's face. Do not take anything people say seriously.  Especially if they're from the east coast...

personally i do it if someone says something false or untrue. but other than that, others do it cause they probably get picked on in real life and the internet is the only way to release their pent up anger. i think you shouldnt worry to much about someone you cant physically see or touch. that will only bring you down. dont dwell on what people online tell you. most of the time its biased and incorrect and like you said..."mean".

When you're sitting behind a computer screen you can pretend to be whatever you want, and as scary or as neat as it sounds people just don't have to care how they impact others. Someone can be as much of a prick as they want maybe because they know they could never get away with that in a face to face situation. People on line the majority of the time are just more outspoken because they don't have any consequences for the way they say something. I'm sorry you've had some bad experiences.... Just think of it as ... some twirp just trying to be macho covering up their own insecurities by talking tough/being mean. Take it for what its worth. There are plenty of people out there with wonderful advice for you.

I know they are! No matter what I ask there is always some jerko with a nasty answer.

You could look at the bright side, however. You are getting an honest answer(usually) even if it hurts your feelings.

You could also thumbs down it if you know it is going to be mean. Sometimes you can tell it's going to be nasty with the first few words.

If they are calling you names you could report them.

Unfortunately, people can be evil, that is why the world is in the shape that it is!

Because being online let's be someone your normally not. A quiet person in life turns out to be the most evil little t**d on the planet.
