Why are people saying Phelps is the best Olympian ever?

I have to agree.  He's a great athlete and the best swimmer in the world, but that's it...he's a fast swimmer.  If swimming was only one race he'd only have one gold medal per Olympics. But, because there is a 50 meter, a 200 meter, a 400 meter Etc.  he keeps racking up the Gold Medals.  He's no Bruce Jenner, I'll say that.

I have to disagree. Swimming have a lot of events in one Olympic, so labeling Phelps as the best is not only unfair and it's an overstatement. There are other athletes who won consecutive gold medals at 4 or 5 Olympic appearances.These athletes devoted their time and hard work for more than 16-20 years but their recognition are cut down (like many of us are doing) because the sport doesn't give out more than one medal per Olympics like swimming.

In this world winning one bronze medal is most likely the zenith of your life time.  He has won 8 gold medal.  If Hercules was alive today, he would hang out with Mike Phelps.  If I was aqua-man I would be worried that Mike Phelps would beat me up.

WOW well hes the best olympian there .. yes its true that the olympics are for diffrent sports but what makes him the greatest is that hes the toughest fighter there hes got 8 medals in these games and 14 in total. out of those 8 medals he got in these games 7 were world records ..no body in the world could say they have done that ..... plus this guy is 23 many people say hes hotttt and well hes freaking talented and his daily routine is eat swim swim swim and sleep and he said that ..... this guy has 14 gold medals many countries wich they had 1 and this guy is only swiming hahahaha wow hes amazing dose that answer your question
