  1. That's what our social norms teach us: TV and print, advertising all have the same unspoken message- buy for gratification, everything's affordable with credit, your possessions are an indication of status, think of tomorrow only as opportunity.

Other people have pointed out that movies and TV series glorify hard masculine ideals of power and dominance; love as an ideal appears as an afterthought, it seems, to justify hardships and pain for sweaty protagonists. Go figure.

  2. it's easy to equate material worth to self-worth.

  3. It makes them feel like they have power, but in the end, it always turns out the same...a load of c**p :)

  4. agree with hurtin'! it's socially learned, just like you learn that slim=desirable, brand shoes=cool, cool=desirable etc etc. plus, money is touchable, you see the direct result: money->power, money->product. with love it's different, you only feel the benefits later...and you can't show them to everyone, as you'd do with a car or any other material possession. money is easier to find and earn, than love. you work a month, you get a paycheck. you care for someone, you might get...suffering. you earn-spend-keep-earn-spend etc. you love...suffer....might love again, might not...

  5. omg....cuz ppl are really stupid. im serious. it seems like it at least.

  6. Its the instant gratification of these days.

    Its sad, really.
