Why are people so ignorant towards science?

I recently had to give a lecture in front of many students at an assembly for the weekly "Diversity of Ideas" night at my school. At my school we do things like this a lot, and I've spoken many times about many different issues.

I presented my case of atheism, along with the bing bang theory, and evolution of life on earth. I backed up all ideas with quantum mechanics, mathematics, and explaining how evolution coincides with all advancing works in biology and genetics.

All throughout my presentation I heard laughing, booing, and I was eventually told to leave the stage. After my presentation, many people told me that I was "godless" and deserved to "go to h**l".

Question: Why are people so ignorant towards science?

Because they can't bare to hear the truth, it would pop their little religious bubble of a life....

Because they are scared that their entire world, created for them by parents, teachers or peer pressure, was all in vain. Because they are simply to scared to accept that their views are probably wrong, so they do whatever they can to destroy you.

I'm sorry you had to go through this. Many religious people need the comfort of a god to get themselves through the day. Life is tough and that is their way of coping with the things out of their control.

Have you heard of the movie that Bill Maher made coming out in October. It is called Religulous . You should enjoy this. Actually all people with rational thought will enjoy this.

Whenver you challenge ant belief system, you will have critics.  Not everyone believes the way you do no matter how many scientific facts you throw at them.  I personally believe that creationism and science go hand-in-hand but that's just me.  Remember the golden rule...never discuss religion, politics, etc...

Where do you live? in America? Over her in England it's not like that at all. In fact quite the reverse. People laugh at the ones that do believe that religion started evolution. To be honest some people are just not willing to open there minds up to different views. However let them think of there narrow minded views, for some reason it gives them comfort to know there is more to world than the reality that we live in!

I'm sure that there are many other people in the world who would appreciate the knowledge that you are giving them.

once you have given your brain to god you don't have to think anymore.there are too many things in the real world that conflict with the idea that we are the center of the universe (among other things). creationists are the narrow mindest and non-thinkingest people on the planet. don't waste your time..

I think you need to reconsider what you consider to be ignorance.

When someone (or an audience) does not agree with your theory, that does not prove a lack of understanding on their part.  As I like to say, "I understand your point of view, but I think you are full of S***."  

There a lot of people with opinions that disagree with yours who can also back up all their ideas with other sources.  You can understand how they reached their conclusions without agreeing with those conclusions.

Did you prepare this as a written speech?  I'd like to read it and perhaps discuss it.

Isn't it funny how people who think they have critical thinking skills thumbs down an answer like mine?  They think they understand science when they base their conclusions on emotions just like the religious people they think so little of.

You still haven't changed your settings to allow anyone to email you.  I can only conclude that you are not sincere and only trolling.  If you really wanted feedback on why the students reacted to your presentation in the way they did you would be willing to share that presentation with me.  Surely you are not afraid that I will show you the error in your analysis and convert you to Christianity.

It's because Christians oppose the big bang theory and evolution theories.  Like me, they believe that God created the heavens and the earth.

But what they were saying is wrong.  You don't deserve to go to h**l, we all do.  But by finding salvation in Christ, we can.

Your's is just an opinion, and they don't agree with you! There are a lot of people who are not ignorant towards science, who disagree with your opinion, and they have evidence to back up theirs.

  And.. the big bang theory & parts of the evolution theory are very sketchy.
