Why are people so judgemental of other cultures?

It makes no sense to me why people hate and are judgements of other cultures because if we were born somewhere else we'd believe in the culture/religion etc because we'd be subject to it right? so instead of fighting one another about religion/morals/values can't we find a way to accept people and their cultures?

and if we think they're wrong let them be wrong.

  1. difference creates war and war creates famine and murder and so long as we are all different it will keep on happening

  2. People are judgemental coz of following reasons: -

    1. Judgement comes from doubts - and doubts are coz of limited knowledge.

    2. To know other cultures you have to be receptive to change and have open mind, its difficult. So people prefer easy things.

    3. As far as accepting other people is concerned: its more of a two way street or it takes two to tango.

Food for thought: In our normal lives how far we are able to accept new people? How we make friendships with other people? In my opinion, its the same principle with people of other cultures but the only thing is we have a work a bit more to find common grounds.

  3. Its ethnocentrism. the belief that ones own culture is superior to other cultures.  Anthropology tries to get past that and understand a culture in its own terms from its point of view...but that rarely helps anything in the big picture I imagine because so few non-academics read anthropology books.

everyone experiences the same type of interplay in different ways occasionally....look at the constant arguing going on between the atheists and the fundamentalists in the religion forum.  they both come from different viewpoints, both truly believes theirs is better.  neither will back down...

its the same process occurring over and over again in different systems and on different levels...

  4. thats be a perfect world but unfortunaly it;l never happen people are to ignorant and closed minded to accept other peoples cultures because its not the same as theirs.

  5. In other words why can't we live like a bumper sticker. Go with the flow, Live and let live, love thy neighbor, Do onto others, and all that there good stuff we have heard since childhood. But like I've said in other answers, the world is controlled by the few. And those few are very good at fence building and looking out for themselves. They accumulate power and will do whatever to protect it. These few are our world leaders, our richest of the rich, and the people who's life styles we envy.

You are right it should be easy!! but it not good business, but it is good business to keep us distracted and fighting each other.

  6. Ignorance... for those who have never experienced life outside of their own cultural context, they can only base judgment on what they see and hear about others.  Unfortunately, our society has a tendency toward bigotry, and focuses on how differences can be negatively interpreted rather than what we can learn from other cultural perspectives and way of life that could improve our own culture.  Many do not take the time to understand the origins of difference and what contributing factors interact to form the big picture.

  7. It makes no sense to me either. And i can't change the world on my own so....i just make sure that things are rite within my own little community. It's the best i can do.
